Google Instant Results And How It Will Impact Your Search Engine Rankings – Your Questions Answered
Google Instant has now been rolled out in Australia. You may have noticed that search results start appearing as soon as you start typing. Each time you type another letter, the results are refreshed.
The biggest question in the world of search engine optimisation and website rankings is – How will this affect my search engine rankings and amount of traffic you receive?
The Results So Far
There has only been a couple of studies and reports done since Google released Instant Results. Of the reports I have read, there is nothing concrete in them at all.
Users have the ability to turn off Instant Results if they wish. I cannot imagine many users turning this feature of because majority of people wouldn’t realise they are using the Instant Results search let alone how to turn the feature off. It will be interesting if Google releases data showing how many people have turned the feature off. I don’t think this would happen and it’s not really that important.
How will this affect your search engine rankings?
There has been no change in the web ranking algorithm based on this new Google Instant Results feature. Any changes that you may notice with your rankings would have happened anyway with or with Instant Results.
How will this affect your traffic?
This is the most critical and important factor in the whole scheme of things. Is this going to affect your traffic?
Users can see the results generated as they are typing. Do you think users are going to keep typing if they can see the result that they want? It depends on how fast they type and where they look as they type.Â I usually look at the screen when typing fast and have aborted typing the rest of my query in when I see a result that I like.
What about the users that you one finger and keep looking up at the screen each time they type in a letter? They may click on the suggested search or click on the results before they finish typing. A slow process for some people!
Being ranked number 1 is more important than ever now
I do not believe that as many people will go past the first page with this new feature. They are going to click on the first, second or third result so much more now. This is my prediction of what is to come.
People will simply click on the result they want without scrolling down or going to the next page. They will simply look at the results as they are typing, if they do not like what they see, they will modify their search query. This is exactly what I have started doing already. We are all creatures of habit and I think it’s a habit that everyone else will pick up.
Do I have monitor key letters and words now?
This is an interesting question because if someone starts typing their search query in and then sees a result they want to look at, they will stop typing. Tracking every letter as it’s typed in for your target keywords may become an important measurement.
For example,Â if I am looking for ‘Internet Marketing Expert’ and I get to ‘Internet Marketing Exp” and find the result that I want, does that mean we should start tracking and monitoring shorter keywords? What about the theory of chasing the long tail keywords? I mean, they are the words that usually convert a lot better than shorter keywords. This is part of the purchasing cycle that buyers go through when researching and buying online.
