What is Skype?
Skype has been used for cheap or free phone calls between friends for a number of years now.

How do I use Skype?
You need to download the Skype software which is free. You can download it here -

If you add your friends to your Skype account, you can call them from your Skype account to their Skype account for free. They can be located anywhere in the world.

You can also use Skype to call any normal phone in the world as well at great rates. For example, you can call up to 30 different countries for 2.7 AUD cents per minute. This compares to Telstra rates at 20 cents plus per minute.

You can also get unlimited calls to normal phones from $1.49 a month.

Who owns Skype?
eBay was the primary owner of Skype but it was recently sold to an investor group led by Silver Lake. The Skype business was valued at $2.75 billion USD as of November 2009 when the deal was completed.

What is the deal with the Skype 3G iPhone App?
The app allows iPhone users to make phone calls using their 3G connection and Skype. This means you could make a phone call using your iPhone and Skype from Australia to the United States for 2.7 cents per minute. This is cheaper than using your normal phone line!

The application for the iPhone has only been available for 4 days and has already been downloaded over 5 millions.

The new iPhone is expected to be released from Apple next month and is expected to support video conferencing. Skype has indicated they want to take advantage of video conferencing features which would be available to users at a very cheap rate.
